Football Fantasy: La Liga 2011/12 Summary

If my improvement in managing fantasy football teams in the Premier League this year is an indication of success, then my maiden foray into the fantasy world of La Liga  is crazily overwhelming with it then!

I started off thinking it would be kinda fun to see if I could manage a team in a league I know so little off. At the end of the season, I had surprised even myself by amassing a total of 1,827.3 points with an impressive average of 48.1 pts per GW! Heck, that’s even higher than my totals in the BPL Fantasy land!:-P

Of course the La Liga is not as popular as the BPL, even in Fantasy League land. With only 200, 157 players worldwide, I managed to place myself as ranked 526 overall, safely in the 0.3% bracket. And to think I started off the season without Ronaldo!!! I only brought CR7 on board from GW7 onwards. One can only imagine where I might have been ranked with both Ronaldo and Messi in my squad from GW1, huh? In addition, with my inexperience in the league, I was only able to raise an additional $8.8M to my team value, which ended with $158.8M

Oh well…there’s always next year to improve on my rankings! Or perhaps I may even try out my skills in the Bundesliga Fantasy League too! :-D

Fantasy Football Summary: Champions Again!

Champs Again! Well, at least in the Fantasy Football land, I have something to worth shouting for joy for, where in the just completed miserable season where in reality, Man City snatched the title with TWO stoppage time goals. Now, perhaps I’d truly understand why they call it stoppage time – the human heart can literally STOP functioning during those anxious-filled period..:-p

So enough about reality (we’ll plot the return of our rightful property next season..), I successfully defended the Number 1 position ranked amongst my friends for the second year running. Woo Hoo! This  year, it’s even all the more sweeter since it involved me clawing back from 5-6th position to 1st position. Extra satisfactory grin there. :-D

On a personal level, it is also an improvement from last year’s achievement where I only scored 1,764 points and ranked 1,341 (0.2%) worldwide. This year, my scores not only improved to 1,773 points and ranked at 789 (0.1%) out of the worldwide total of 536,180 players, I managed to achieve my target of finishing inside the 1,000 bracket. Sub 500 target for next season, I reckon? :-P

On other stats, my weekly average score was 46.7 pts/Gameweek with the scoring spread summarised below:

Highest GW: 97.8 pts (GW 36); Lowest: 12.8 pts (GW 5)

Scoring Spread: >60 pts (6 times); 50-60 pts (10); 40-50 pts (9); 30-40 pts (10); <30 pts (3)

Guess that puts my par estimate at 40 pts just about right. :-)

My team value finished at $172.8M, marking my business profits in dealing and trading players quite good with an increase of $22.8M throughout the season. As expected, the value only increased $1.8M from GW 30. So, major tip for increasing team value is to get it done by GW 20..

So, instead of providing more tips (like I already did last year…they are still valid, y’know!), I would like to reflect on the exciting race in FF land and zoom in key GWs that allowed me to defend my No. 1 position:

GW1: Starting off the season well is always GOOD. With Rooney, Young and Klasnic, I managed to kick off with a super 55.3 pts

GW5: Lowest points EVER at 12.8 pts. Two of my defenders were on teams that conceded 4 goals and one other player had a red card! Incredible stuff. Only silver lining: most people suffered like I did in GW5 too!

GW20: First Double GW featuring Spurs and Everton players. Early planning enabled me to notch up 63.5 pts here. At this stage, I had already climbed up to the triple dogfight in the top 3 amongst my friends.

GW24: Whilst one of my friends, Friend A started to drop points in this pivotal Q3 of the season, Friend P was the front runner and making many good picks with his captain choices. In GW24, I was fortunate enough to pick RVP to captain my side, just like Friend P, and we managed to score 36 pts behind his hattrick in Arsenals 7-1 trashing of Blackburn. An important GW where I kept up with the leader.

GW27: Switching to Clint Dempsey bore much fruits when he scored 2 goals and some assists (apparently on his birthday) in a 5-0 trashing of Wolves. End result: 28 pts and closing the gap on the leader.

GW30: The week where I finally took over the lead. Taking a chance with Norwich’s Grant Holt paid off when he scored 2 goals (but got a red too) vs Wolves.

GW 34: In the final stretch of the season, GW 34-36 was always going to be critical where my friends could either catch up or I could break away. Thus, much planning was put into place especially for this stretch. I remembered GW 34 was almost a ‘half’ gameweek, where only about 10 teams were taking part. I was able to field 10 players here compared to 6-7 players for most other teams. End result: 60.4 pts and more daylight between me and the chasing pack.

GW35: This was a double GW for ‘fighting for survival’ teams Bolton and Villa. Revamping my squad to include Lichaj (Villa) and Petrov (Bolton) paid off with 66.5pts

GW36: This was the biggest GW of the season, with double games for many teams. With prior planning, I managed to squeeze in 8 players in my squad who would be playing twice. Unfortunately Gary Cahill (Chelsea) picked up an injury the week before so I ended up with a whopping 7 players playing twice. with RDV (Spurs) as captain, I amassed a career high 97.8 pts! At the end of GW 36, my overall rankings even surged from 1198 to 737!

Final take-away: a little planning will help the points to go a long way!

Can’t wait for the new season to begin! :-D

Passion to Live!

One thing I’ve got to give credit to the passion fruit in my garden – it’s got plenty of passion and perseverance! Hmmm…probably preseverance too…of its life! :-P

Let’s do a quick recap of what happened to my passion tree after my last entry about it about to die and all..

- There was once two main branches, now only one remain

- The leaves from the first dying branch was already withering..

- The head branch of the one that remained snapped a couple of months ago…

And yet, some weeks ago, we noticed some bunches of passion fruits still growing and presenting themselves to be picked!

DSCN5290

How does the passion fruit continue to survive?! I really have no idea.

Perhaps one of its branches has managed to find water source through another root?

Perhaps they are even feeding on the juices of its own fruits (gasp?!)?

Perhaps I have mutant planted mutant passion fruits?!

Perhaps I got the desert species of passion fruits?

Or perhaps it just just too stubborn to die?

Whatever it is, I continue to be amazed at its passion to survive!

Friday Funnies: Avengers Edition

Do you know if your kids are learning the right things in kindergarten? Do you know if the kindergarten syllabus is safe and solid? Do you know if there aren’t any evil forces at work where you send your kids to kindergarten?

Well…better prepare yourself because today’s blog is bound to send blood-curling chills up your spine…

The other day, I was flipping through my sons apparently harmless looking activity workbook form his kindergarten when I saw this page…

SNC01039

Scary,ain’t it?

It is scary enough to see the ‘harmless’ activity mention the evil Norse God of Trickery, Loki. When you read the entire page line after line, you get “Loki kata ‘Mari’”, translated, it frighteningly means Loki said ‘come’!

GASP! Quick, we need the Avengers in Malaysia too!

Think your job sucks?…

Creatively, Bersih

I have to admit that having a ‘duduk bantah’ set-up for Bersih 3.0 is pretty creative! From the offset, it sounds really safe and easy to do for everyone who wanted to participate. So I guess it’s not entirely a surprise that the total participants increased in multiple folds from Bersih 2.0!

Of course, certain quarters would still argue that 1% of the entire Malaysian population participating in the rally does NOT form the majority of the voice of the country. Of course, the argument does not take into equation the millions others who were sincerely not able to attend the rally.

So, what next for Bersih? How creative can it be for future editions to involve MORE Malaysians in these rallies? Here are some suggestions to get the ball rollin’…

1. Bersih 60+

Similar to Earth Hour 60+, we could get all participants to protest in total blackout fashion for a designated ONE HOUR on a particular date. Looking at the response to Earth Hour, I believe Bersih 60+ can easily break into more than a million participants. :-D

2. Umbrella Uprising

Set a specific duration of about 1-2 hours on a particular time and day where all participants would open up their umbrellas in protest for that entire duration..

3. Shaded Protest

All participants to group themselves under some tree and sit/stand there for the specified duration of protest..

4. Honk to be Heard!

For 30 mins to 1 hour, everyone protesting in a car is to sound their horns simultaneously and continuously…

5. Mosaic Protest

Have a portal or system to collect individual photos or mugshots of all participants showing their love for the country (eg. holding up a hibiscus, eating nasi lemak, etc.). These individual photos will then be compiled into a gigantic mosaic as a unified voice of protest..

What other creative ways do you know of for rallies?

The Day Our Govt Ensured Bersih 3.0′s Success

28 April 2012, or rather now fondly known numerically as just 428, is the date that will forever be etched into Malaysia’s historical annals.

Nope. Not because some estimated 250,000 Malaysians thronged the streets of KL for a sit-down Bersih 3.0 rally voicing and demanding for free and fair elections.

Nope. Not because thousands of other Malaysians in other states and even all over the world coordinated and participated in similar Bersih 3.0 rallies that synchronized with the one held in KL.

428 will forever be remembered as “The Day Our Govt Ensured Bersih 3.0′s Success”…

After Bersih 2.0 took place on 709, I made some comments in my blog entitled ‘A Tale of Two Rallies‘, which basically provides some insights into what could have happened if the ruling Govt had allowed the rally to go on peacefully vs. what had actually happened.

I believe a similar ‘Sliding Door’ moment arrived in the form of 428 in which the Govt once again chose the path of NOT allowing the rally to go on. In my opinion, this decision is the reason and key factor in ensuring Bersih 3.0′s success. Here’s why:

An estimated 250,000 people braved the traffic congestion and possible roadblocks to enter the streets of KL for the sit-down rally. This would account for probably 1% of the entire Malaysia population. Now, when we consider the other Malaysians from all other states who also coordinated their own Bersih 3.0 rallies within their own states, I would estimate the total number of Malaysians who took to the streets could be in the 3% range.

Using my ‘Sliding Door’ postulation, let’s consider what might have happened if the Govt had allowed the planned sit-down rally to be carried out peacefully; for the PDRM to be deployed to oversee the smoothness and safety of the rally participants; for public transportation to double or triple their rounds to assist participants to get in and out of KL smoothly (can just imagine the revenues doubling or tripling too!); etc. After the rally, all 3% of the participants would have gone home happy, safe and unhurt. Govt could put up some headlines that the rally went smoothly with the assistance and efficient handling and coordination of the PDRM. Rally proves the Govt truly listens to the people because ‘rakyat didahulukan‘…

Nah. Instead, the Govt decided to make things as difficult as possible for the participants to rally that day. Barricades were set up to prevent entry into Dataran Merdeka; Water cannons and tear gases were questionably used on the participants – even those who were already dispersing after the rally; Confiscation of cameras and memory cards from journalists; LRT shutdowns in the evening that inconvenienced participants going home; Censorship of news from foreign channels; Biased reporting in mainstream media of the event; etc.

To the remaining 97% of the Malaysian population who were not directly involved in the rally, I would estimate maybe about 30% were willing and aware but unable to join in the rally. After learning about the horror list of things that was carried out by the Govt before, during and after 428, the remaining 67% of the Malaysian population, who previous couldn’t be bothered about the entire rally or its causes, would most likely stand up and pay attention closer now!

With the advancement of technology in today’s generation, information is highly accessible in the masses. My estimate is that all the decisions and actions taken by the Govt against Bersih 3.0 may have potentially affected 30% of the fence-sitters who could have been sleeping all this while. This would give us roughly 63% of Malaysians ‘awakened’ to the real situation and objectives of Bersih 3.0. Remove all children who are too young to comprehend the situation and we could be looking at a higher percentage of Malaysians that have been enlightened via 428. And we have not even started counting Malaysians residing overseas who staged their own Bersih 3.0 rallies as well! And…THAT, in my books, is surely a SUCCESS for Bersih 3.0

“Were you also awakened or inspired by Bersih 3.0? Will you be ready when our very own sliding door moment – the General Elections arrives?”

Post Mortem: 5 Things That Went Wrong at the Manchester Derby

I am pissed. Seriously pissed.

At the beginning of April, Arsenal snatched a win at the Emirates over Manchester City to gift Manchester United with a whopping 8 point lead at the top with only SIX games remaining! Man Utd were in a position beyond ‘pole’ to claimed their unprecedented 20th Premier League title.

3 matches later, Man Utd had dropped FIVE points – suffering a 0-1 shocker at Wigan and a near impossible, wild 4-4 draw vs Everton. All of a sudden, the Manchester Derby on Labor Day 2012 would prove more decisive than ever. With THREE important points at stake and having a more superior goal difference, Man City would go top if they were to triumph over Man Utd.

End result: Man City 1 Man Utd 0, with Vincent Kompany heading in the only goal to push Man City to the top on a +8 goal difference with 2 matches remaining. Sigh.

So without any ‘grey-coloured’ jerseys to blame, where did Sir Alex Ferguson get it wrong this time? Here’s my post mortem of 5 things that went wrong at the recent Manchester Derby:

1. Lacking Ambition

Holding on to a slender 3 point lead heading into the Derby, SAF was clearly lacking the ambition to go ahead to kill off the competition. His tactics and strategy clearly highlighted his objective of securing a draw and protect the 3 point lead. I don’t think I saw any dangerous attempt at goal or even any shot on target from the team in red. Big Mistake.

2. Ageing Midfield

I still couldn’t believe SAF opted to start the Derby with a museum-like midfield consisting of Scholes, Giggs, and Park. With Man City’s tough midfield general in Yaya Toure and flanked by speedy Nasri and Silva, Scholes in particular had absolutely no chance to dictate the pace of the game. Park was left running aimlessly (till he was substituted) and Giggs was quite invisible supporting the flanks.

3. The Hunger Games

SAF totally got it wrong if he had thought experience would win see Man Utd through. With so many ageing stars who already have won plenty at the club, perhaps a gutsier option would be to throw in some youth who would have more hunger to win the Championship. Check out the talent left warming the bench: Young, Valencia, Chicarito, Welbeck, etc. With Nani being the only noticeable winger o the field, Man Utd offered absolutely no threat along the flanks. I usually notice Nani pairs up well with Evra on the left, but the preferred lineup pushed him to the right, which impeded his usefulness.

A better option would have been to start with Valencia on the right and Nani on the left, offering more offensive options along the flanks. Scholes should have been rested in this high-tempo game in favour of Jones in midfield and Rafael to cover right back. But then again, SAF was playing his defensive set of cards that day..sigh.

4. Faulty Formation

Over the years, SAF has been openly criticized for playing the ultra-defensive, Champions League mode formation of 4-5-1. It has (i) never really brought Man Utd much success and (ii) often created more confusion amongst the players who are almost programmed to play the attacking 4-4-2 formation week in, week out.

So the 4-5-1 formation clearly cements SAF’s fear of the opponents capabilities. It was until much later in the 2nd half when Valencia and Young were thrown in to save the game. Sadly by then, the noisy City bus was already parked in their goal behind Joe Hart.

5. Losing Mind Games

I have to tip my hat off to Mancini. Over the years, SAF is highly regarded to be a master at playing mind games with his opponents. Most evident was when Man Utd chased down Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle from 14 points down in 1996 to win the title behind SAF’s effective mind games.

This season, Mancini has successfully taken the pressure off his players in these last few games by insisting Man Utd would still win the league, bla, bla bla. I would never have imagined Man Utd to lose the plot with just 6 games remaining but it looks like we are choking as badly as Keegan’s Newcastle back then…

When I reflect on the past 36 games of the current season, I have to admit Man Utd has been quite poor in terms of consistency in performance, exertion of authority and in-game focus. However, it does not take away the fact that coming round the final bend of this season, a run of 8 consecutive matches has put Man Utd in a superb position to win the league again…until now.

We have totally lost the initiative to Man City with 2 games left. I certainly hope SAF can inspire Man Utd to finish strongly and hope for Man City to drop points to Newcastle or QPR…

What could be worse than living next to noisy neighbours? Why, living next to noisy champions, of course…. :-(

Please Man Utd…please don’t make it so….
