Passionately Fruiting

I have to say I am pretty pleased with the passion tree/plant/vine whatever that is crawling all over my backyard. Sure, the sight isn’t really pleasing to the eye, but the wait was well worth it.

Passion Fruits is something I can really understand. From the name  point of view, the plant crawls all over the place, creating a mess I have no idea how to clean up, produces flowers that look relatively ugly compared to typical florals with petals and smells and all….and yet, finally manages to produce the fruit which is really juicy and sweet. Makes me wonder where the name ‘passion’ was derived from.

Is it how they passionately crawl and cling on to any wires and walls? hmmm.

Anyway, here is a pictoral tale of the passion fruit in my garden…

After months of crawling (and still is), the bud appears...

...and the flower blooms...yes, it looks pretty, right?...pretty weird if you ask me..

...and finally! The fruit appears....mmmmmm

Looks juicy eh?..:-D

Stay tuned when I take my first bite from this fruit! :-D

sweet??? passion fruits are sour, isn’t it? but the flower looks wildly exotic. hmm…maybe that’s how the passion starts. ;)

Argentinadog: Hahaha…yeah, they are typically sweetly sourish..:-p

My friend gave me a passionfruit plant yesterday and was wondering how to care for it.. and came across your site!

I read in this book called Practical Herb Gardening by Jessica Houdret that the intricate form of the flower is used to represent Christ’s crucifixion. Three styles to represent the nails used for the cross, 5 anthers for the 5 wounds, corona is the crown of thorns and 10 sepals are the 10 of 12 disciples – leaving Peter and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Created by the Roman Catholic missionaries in South America..

Thank you for sharing your passionfruit plant photos. Am thinking where to let it creep now.. Blessed Easter. God bless. :)

Hey WY! Thanks for dropping by!

That’s a beautiful description of how its name came to be! Thanks for sharing!

Some tips for taking care of the passion fruit (as mentioned to me by gardening pros like my MIL):

    1. Plant at least TWO main branches of the passion fruit…not too near from each other. This would somehow help the vines to grow stronger and bear more fruit!
    2. Try to keep the main roots safe from harm, especially if you have pets in your garden.
    3. Ensure the vines have sufficient climbing area, like wired fences, etc.

Also, if you have been following my blog, you should be forewarned that passion fruits are known to attract snakes too! So, try to keep your garden area clean, as in pick up the fruits FAST when they drop to the ground. Also, remember to trim the vines if they start to crawl over to your neighbour’s place too!

Have fun and have a blessed Easter too! :-D
