Who Needs Christmas Presents?!

The Gift – Ray Boltz

The Gift (Ray Boltz)

For them there were no presents
Around the Christmas tree
No flashing lights unless you count
The lamp across the street
A fire in a barrel
No chimney and no roof
To most of them Santa Claus
Was the man who made the soup

In an alley was a mother
Two children by her side
Trying hard to keep the spark
Of true Christmas alive
She said we may not have some things
That other people do
But Christmas is for everyone
And were Gods children too

Oh and Jesus loves you
And so do I
Think about the baby
And the star up in the sky
I don’t think Santa’s comin’
Cause he don’t know where we live
But who needs Christmas presents
We already have the gift

Well early Christmas morning
While they were still asleep
I packed a box of food and clothes
And walked back to their street
Imagine my surprise
When I saw presents all around
Blankets, toys and winter coats
Beside them on the ground
And the card I read from Santa said
Inside the three of you
The real heart of Christmas
Is still beating strong and true

Oh and Jesus loves you
And so do I
Think about the baby
And the star up in the sky
Santa Claus is comin’
Cause he know where real faith lives
But who needs Christmas presents
We already have the gift
Who needs Christmas presents
We already have the gift
Who needs Christmas presents
We already have the gift

PS3 Craze

In Malaysia, we usually only get to see queues this long at buffet spreads or concert ticket counters on the 11th hour….gosh.

Personally, I’m not sure if the upcoming launch of PS3 will draw similar, illogical crowds as in the USA, but I was shocked to read of the many obstacles some of these fanatics were willing to overcome to lay their hands on this ptiece of treasure (which would probbaly become obsolete over the next year or so when PS4 comes out…heh)

Here are some extracts taken from AP article about this craze:

NEW YORK – Die-hard gamers and entrepreneurs prepared to shell out $500 or more for the new PlayStation 3 console that goes on sale Friday, many of them after waiting in line for days despite the likelihood they’d go home empty-handed.

Retailers across the country arranged midnight sales at some of their stores. Lines sometimes stretched around the block, even where the first consoles wouldn’t be sold until Friday morning. Deliveries went down to the wire with FedEx vans sending boxes of the sleek black or silver consoles to individual stores Thursday.

Nine months pregnant, Julie Mosley said she tried to ignore her contractions for the chance to score machines for her family, her daughter’s father and her younger brother.

“I’m going to hold out as long as I can,” Mosley said Thursday as she sat on a cooler in the 19th spot outside aCircuit City in Mount Laurel, N.J., joking about giving birth on the sidewalk.

Potential customers braved freezing temperatures in Fargo, N.D., and heavy rain and winds in Baltimore and other East Coast locales.

“Katrina could come through here and I wouldn’t switch,” said Marco Cajas, 20, of Baltimore. “I spent the night on the cold street.”

In Palmdale, Calif., authorities shut down a Super Wal-Mart after some shoppers got rowdy late Wednesday and started running around inside the store. In West Bend, Wis., a 19-year-old man ran into a pole and struck his head racing with 50 others for one of 10 spots outside a Wal-Mart.

At a Circuit City Stores Inc. location in New York, potential buyers traded accusations of line-cutting and tried to avoid fights amid heightened emotions.

Some customers were buying PS3 machines for themselves or as gifts, but many were hoping to resell them at a profit. Even before Friday’s launch, units were fetching four or five times their retail price at the eBay Inc. auction site.

“As soon as I buy it, I’m going to sell it,” said Jose Mota, 26, who grabbed the first spot in line Tuesday outside the Union City, Calif., Best Buy. “People will pay whatever just to get their hands on one.”

At a Best Buy in Boston with 140 machines for sale, employees simply gave out tickets for the first 140 in line so that everyone can go home.

At San Francisco’s Sony Metreon mall, a “sacred scroll” notebook kept track of the first 505 people in line so they could go to the bathroom or pick up food without losing their spots.

Some even got wristbands guaranteeing a unit.

“It’s pretty cool that I’d be one of the first people in the country to have it,” said Chris Toribio, 21. “Being in line, waiting here with all these other people and making a big deal of the introduction — in some ways this all feels even better than actually buying the game.”

There was even a vibrant economy in Mount Laurel, N.J. Restaurants not only delivered pizza and wings, but also dispatched workers to hand out menus. The Dick’s Sporting Goods store nearby sold camp chairs and more than a few tents.

Woof! Woof!

rotti

Greetings! Most of you may only know my owner, but since he’s terribly busy of late, I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself to his network on Multiply.

I have been staying in my new home for slightly more than a week now.  Finally managed to con this family to adopt me from the my vet/pet shop where I grew up. Good thing my new owners have a garden for me to run around for my much needed daily exercise and toilet breaks. If not, I gotta come up with a new escape plan again. And the humans thought Prison Break was edge of the seat…bah!

A brief info on my stats, especially to single females out there *wink wink*

Name : Rotti (yeah, as in bread… name has been given to me since my days as a puppy, so I guess I shall stick with it. Seems to make my new owners think I’m obedient everytime they roll it off their tongues anyway.)

Gender: Male (yeah, baby!)

Type: Rottweiler local cross (hmmm, probably that’s where my name was derived)

Age: 1 year plus adult (ahem!)

Fav Food: Obviously good quality doggie pellets and canned chunky dog food, since I practically grew up with those as my staple diet. My new owners seems to be trying to coax me to eat something called RICE though.

Likes: Chunky dog food, exercise, bath, rain, being fed, FREEDOM!

Dislikes: Chain, cage, rice, (what do they think I am, some kind of animal?! At least after the third day at my new home, I have been given freedom to roam around without being caged up. Hmmm…these new owners may not be too bad after all.)

Think I better leave now. Will share more when I get another dog day afternoon. Not as easy to type with paws, ok?…Meanwhile, here are some photos of me.

——————————

Number of the Day:

Not sure what is my owner’s morbid fascination with numbers anyway, but I’ll try to continue his weird habit:

2 – new friends I have acquainted so far in this new neighbourhood. One is especially closer since he is a small terrier and can come over to my garden through the gate anytime he wants to.

Doing the Math…

The verdict on the head butting incident is in, and it has caused stirrings from all over as well. Personally I didn’t like the decision one bit, but then again, here are some comparisons. You do the math.

Players

Zinedine Zidane

Marco Materazzi

Nationality

French

Italian

Court Name

Head-Butter

Provoker

Status

Retired

Active

Reputation Highly regarded as one of the games’ greatest midfielders, ex-FIFA World Player of the Year, etc.; Reputation somehow has put his numerous scuffles on and off the pitch in the shadows. Known as a bad boy for some scuffles on the pitch, esp in the EPL
$ Fine

7,500 Swiss francs ($6,014)

5,000 Swiss francs ($4,010)

Matches Banned

3

2

Immediate Consequences Since sudah retire, he’ll be doing charity or social work instead (head-butting tutoring, maybe) Misses Italy’s opening two Euro 2008 qualifiers against Lithuania on September 2 and, ironically, France on September 6
Injury Status Some sweat taken off Matz’s jersey to gloss his bald head… Bruises to chest area. Must have been rather painful too.
External supporting statements “It is intelligent, measured and reasonable. It shows knowledge of the world of football…The provoker of the incident has been punished.  It’s a penalty that hits the one who, in my opinion was responsible. Zidane wasn’t the guilty one. You have to keep control but the responsible one is the one who provokes, the one who decides to destabilise a player by means other than sporting means.” – Jean-Pierre Escalettes “It’s scandalous to suspend a player for having said something. It’s the first time it’s been done and it’s only because Materazzi is Italian and because they wanted to justify the action of a great champion (Zidane) but who was in the wrong.” - Paolo Maldini

“It’s a disgraceful sentence that shows yet again how Italy’s football federation carries no weight at FIFA.”  - Maurizio Lupi

Some thoughts:

1.       Do football players need to play with their a duct tape over their mouths?

2.       Comparing the punishment for both players, I’m sure Matz would have felt he should have head-butted Zizou first…heh heh….

3.       Will this type of verdict actually promote more head-butting now that everyone knows how ‘severe’ the punishment is…

2,500 – Swiss Francs. Difference between hurting people with your head and getting bruised instead. Go do the math. ;-P

Klang Book & Feast Adventure

Had an unbelievable book and feast adventure in Klang yesterday. After church, took a drive down to Klang where we all rendezvous at the house of a Klang-bred girl. Like wolves, we quickly moved like a pack of wolves to a bak kut teh eatery, recommended because they served both the dry and soupy types. Although the meal can be considered overall rather satisfactory, the soupy version couldn’t compare to other places (in Klang as well as in Serdang) I’ve tried before. The dry-type was an interesting introduction for me though. The way that it was cooked excellently brought out the natural smells of the sotong, shrimps and all. Best part of lunch was that the entire meal was almost illogically cheap! Cost per head was approx RM 6!…

Like clockwork, we proceeded to West Port to visit the book fest onboard the MV Doulos. This oldest floating bookshop in the world travels all over the world and is currently docked in Port Klang for about a month. The last time it was here was like 4 or 5 years ago, so one can imagine the crowd that just wanted to climb aboard this historical ship.

Reached the destination at around 3pm and was shocked to see the queue of people starting from the car park area right to the port terminal! Frying our brains in the desert-like heat of a Sunday afternoon wasn’t exactly fun, to put it bluntly. An hour later we finally managed to move into the partially air-conditioned terminal and move towards the boat. Was stopped again halfway coz due to the max capacity of the boat, people had to come down form the boat before others could go onboard. Think of those ware-house sales concept and you’d know what I mean. ;-P. Only managed to plant my feet onboard the boat at around 5pm. About the length of a football match. :-o .

My jaws dropped when a friend that has been working on Doulos for some time shared that the crowd we saw yesterday does not even come close to the crowd in Taiwan where the total per day visiting was around 26,000 people (about 5X the crowd that Sunday)!

Amidst the stuffiness and sea of people , I managed to buy some books before disembarking the boat at about 6.30pm. Replenished fluids before shooting off for Teluk Gong for an excellent seafood dinner at Coconut Flower. Lotsa crabs, fish, mutant-sized la-las, etc. Ironic thing was that the house specialty was the salted chicken…no kidding.

Reached home and unloaded stuff close to 11.00pm. Stomach has definitely been well-treated that day. Haven’t weighed myself after the trip though. Hope the loss of fluids through sweat during the 2-hour queue would minimize the damage to the scales. ;-P

—————–

Numbers from the Trip:

Cost of port entrance fee – RM 1

Cost of 1.5l 100plus to replenish fluids – RM 3

Cost of toll charges to and fro. – RM 6

Cost of car petrol used for journey (est) – RM 15

Cost of fantastic rich-in-cholesterol bak kut teh lunch – RM 65

Cost of books bought onboard MV Doulos – RM 150

Cost of superb rich-in-cholesterol seafood dinner in Teluk Gong – RM 222

Cost of hanging out together with old uni friends for an adventure of fattening, sun-bathing, laughing, chatting, updating; and also meeting up with Doulos veteran and also ex-Uni mate Simon – PRICELESS.

Thanks you guys for an exhaustively wonderful time together! ;-D

Hidden Games

One month of football madness around the world is finally over. Three days already. *pause*

OK. So it’s true. Gotta get on with life now. ;-p Congrats to the Azzuris for claiming their 4th world title amidst all the courtroom drama back home. They did so by breaking their own WC penalty jinx by beating France 5-3 after it ended 1-1 at the end of extra-time.

However, what I would like to highlight today is that throughout the one-month carnival in Germany, football was NOT the only sport played. If one had been following the tourney closely, one would at least be able to spot other games interlaced with the beautiful game. Here are three examples of games that I noticed…

1. UNO

The Holland-Portugal match would be the perfect example of the ref having played one too many rounds of UNO the night before. And throughout the tourney, cards of yellow and red were wildly drawn out and flashed to players; cards changing colour (another classic ref blunder); three of a kind (wait, that’s poker..); reverse of decisions (ref Eli’s overrule of the linesmen offside flag still invokes anger in all Korean hearts; right decision though..); of course not forgetting the other colors of Uno – the gree of the beautiful stadias in Germany and the blue and black bruises from the Italy-USA street fight match….And in the end, Italy proved to be Numero Uno.

2. DIVING

A sport that has gained popularity in recent times, this WC edition saw a deluge of dives (most amateurish and beginners..) from various countries. Statistically, this was an improvement over previous editions where certain countries only practiced this dark art. Most notable ones include Grosso’s masterpiece that broke Aussie hearts, Henry’s theatre act that put out Portugal n the semis, and Maulada’s 9.95 score in the final. Even FIFA prez Mr Blatter himself admitted to be a diver in his coloured history. If there were to be a spinoff from the greatest sporting show on earth, it would be diving.

3. MATADOR (Bull-Fighting)

A classic Spanish sport where the fighter bravely steps in front of a bull with a red cape and performs heart-stopping acts of last-second evasions from the bulls’ charges. It was also on showcase in the final when Zizou literally gored Materazzi and earned a red cape, err, card, thus ending his illustrious career on a sad note and promoting bull fighting to thousands of French kids who idolize him.

24 – years of suffering before Italy won the World Cup again this year. In 1994, Brazil also ended 24 years of suffering by claiming the trophy on US soil. So, I’ve laid my disappointments to rest and look ahead to South Africa 2010, exactly 24 years since my Argentina last won the Cup….;-D

Bitterly Swallowed

Sale! Cheap cheap sale! If you’re thinking I’m taking about the upcoming August Malaysia Mega Sale, you’re mistaken. The dizzying sales have already started and is currently on-going in a big way in a particular country in Europe where football is being celebrated for a month. And, no, the WAGS are not involved at all in these sales…

No kidding. The cheapest sales around Germany are the men in black. (sometimes grey, yellow, etc. now..;-)) The Referees, who have been under heavy criticisms throughout the competition, played a really significant role in the quarters, especially in the tragedy where my Argentina were sent home after a cruel penalty shoot-out with our German hosts. With that calamitous loss, my interest in the World Cup edition this year effectively and prematurely ended.

The ref (from Slovenia) was crystal clearly biased in his favourisms towards the host team the entire 120 minutes of the match. Even a neutral friend observed that many decisions were strangely against the Argies! Besides that, some painful decisions from the match included:

  1. Lahm’s final minute tackle on Maxi Rod inside the penalty box. Such an obvious foul but the ref had no guts to point to the spot. He even got a pat on the back from the Germans and also dished out a yellow for poor Maxi for poor simulation. Though known for our theatrics, that incident was a very real foul on the Argentines.
  2. Towards the end of the match, the stats showed Argentines committing about 50% more fouls than the Germans….meaning 50% more freekicks to the Germans! Stats certainly don’t lie…
  3. Ballack committing two fouls in two separate incidences – one was where he handled the ball unnoticed. Two was when he dived to the ground and clutched his face as if hit by the Clothesline from Hell with Ayala’s slightest touch. Ref gave a free-kick to the Argies but no yellow card…Germans must have bought that colored card from their mega sale as well.

Another bitter thing about the loss was that we lost our 100% record in WC shoot-outs, not helped particularly with our penalty specialist and No. 1 keeper being stretchered off in the second half. Ah well, sifting through the various factors to blame (bought refs, wrong tactics, wrong subs, penalty woes, etc.) the fact remains that Argentina is out of the World Cup already…sigh….sob sob…;-((.

Heartbreak. Gutted. Crushed. Stunned. Disappointment. Tragedy. Catastrophe. Disaster.

While the remaining teams continue to bargain for refs or other tactics to move to the next round, the devastated Argentines will instead be bargaining for chewable or liquefied versions of that terribly bitter pill….

Number of the Day:

4 – teams left in the competition, all European. Sigh. Even the Argentines are not doing too well in the Wimbledon either. Double sigh.

Sleepless over World Cup

Several heart attacks, sore throats, panda-eye looks, not having enough sleep, clocking in late for work on a regular basis – just some symptoms of an epidemic that only comes around to infect the entire world once every four years…World Cup fever!

As I think of whether the above torture is worth it, I simply recall some of the more memorable moments over the past 56 matches. In no particular order, and sorted by numbers, these are my personal moments so far in the on-going World Cup in Germany:

0 – Goals conceded in regulation time by the Swiss in this year’s World Cup; Also the total goals scored by the Swiss in a penalty shoot-out with Ukraine. Result: Swiss creates history by becoming first team in WC history to be knocked out without conceding a single goal. Strange, but true…

3 – Yellow cards shown to the same Croat by ref Graham Poll is just the tip of the iceberg of dodgy refereeing throughout this World Cup. This incident, however, caught my eye for sheer embarrassment (for Poll) and humor (for the fans)…

4 – Red cards and 12 yellow cards outshone Portugal’s hard-fought 1-0 win over rivals Holland in a 2ndround clash. The aftermath: a depleted Portugal midfield moves on to face toothless England; Hollandgoes home (yet again!); Mr Ivanov gets a shelling from all sides – FIFA prez even quoting the ref should be shown a yellow card himself!

Also, 4 different England formations in four matches seen….totally disorganized, boring, dull, unimaginative, scrappy…and yet they are in the quarters with a lucky draw with depleted Portugal next.

6 – Goals that kick-started the World Cup ending with hosts Germany beating Costa Rica 4-2. Goal-rush in a WC opening match?!! Who would have thunk?! Also, total goals scored by Argentina in their demolition of Serbia-Montenegro in a group match. Best dominating team performance of the World Cup so far.

12 – minutes introducing Lionel Messi to the stage of World Cup. Coming in the 78th minute againstSerbia, this talented Argentine announced his arrival in Germany with an assist and grabbed a goal himself. What a joy to watch this boy wonder in action!

15 – Goals scored in World Cup finals; This most goals scored record was achieved by Ronaldo in this morning’s Last 16 match vs Ghana. Incredible achievement considering many critics panned his overweightness throughout the tourney.

24 – Surgical precision passes strung together by the Argentines capped by a cool finish by midfielder Cambiasso in their 2nd goal vs the Serbs in their second Group C match. Brilliant. Breathtaking. Definitely a contender for goal of the tournament.

95 – minute heartbreaker for Australia when 10-man Italy was awarded a penalty against them in a 2ndround action match-up. Totti came off the bench to slot it home to break the 0-0 deadlock and sent all Aussies crying home.

98 – th minute left-footed dipping thunderbolt volley past the Mexican keeper by Maxi Rodriguez sealsArgentina’s place in the quarter-finals. Watching this goal LIVE alone is worth all my sleeping hours lost. Commentators are hailing it as possibly the second greatest goal in World Cup history (behind Maradona’s ’86 slalom). Fans are still talking about this strike all over the world. I still gasp in amazement, even after watching the replay in every angle for the umpteenth time.

8 more matches to go….bring out the coffee! Some things are actually worth losing sleep over!

Saham? Baham!

Never before has the tiny Maybank branch of Cyberjaya been swamped like a pasar malam….and this is not even close to some banks in KL where some people were reportedly queueing up outside the bank since 4.45am!!!

A total of 1 billion units of ASM were being sold to the public yesterday and within less than 2 hours, the quota allocated for NBs were sold out liao…really siao indeed.

Good thing Cyber people quite lazy to camp outside the bank doors so when I scurried to the bank at 9.30am, there was only a short queue in front of me…..and that also had me waiting 2 hours to complete the transaction.

Was it worth the wait of sitting like a dungu in the bank wasting precious company time and losing almost the entire morning? Worth every second man…;-D

Wild ‘I danced’ video CD

When it was first published in 2003, the book became an instant hit off the bookshelves. One year later, it was the number one best-selling book in more than 100 countries. Today, its worldwide success has made it amongst the most successful fictional works of all time.

And not surprisingly, about three years later, Dan Brown’s DaVinci Code has spawned its fair share of accolades, criticism, a plagiarism law suit, and an upcoming summer movie as well!

So, what is it about this novel that has attracted the interest of virtually everyone to pick up a copy and be immersed in Brown’s exciting world of espionage, intrigue and religious scandals? Could it be that this ‘fiction’ is mentioned to be strongly based on thoroughly researched ‘facts’? Could it be that the alternate picture of Christianity seems to appeal to the people of today? Could it be that the people of today will believe just about anything?

Some of the questions readers of the book have been asking include:

¨       Was Jesus merely a man?

¨       Did Jesus really father a child with Mary Magdalene?

¨       Were all those stuff like Knights Templar, Opus Dei, Priory of Sion, etc. true?

¨       Is the Bible I’m reading today different from the originals?

¨       Is the Bible reliable now?

¨       I just don’t know what to believe anymore!

If you have already read the book, or planning to, or eagerly awaiting the movie release, or just interested to know more about this novel…come and attend this special session conducted by STM, The Bible Society of Malaysia and the Methodist Churches as we delve deeper into the pages of this bestseller to historically and biblically discern the FACT from the FICTION so that we will know how to respond to anyone we come across with questions or interests related to the novel.
